State of the Browser – June 2010

One of the biggest headaches for most web designers is evaluating which browsers to support and to what extent to support them. Whilst there are plenty of people advocating leaving old browsers behind to a lesser or greater extent, many of us still work with clients who can't or won't compromise on support for older browsers. And by old browsers, I mean of course the venerable Internet Explorer 6.

DIBI Conference – My Review

After several months looking forward to it and much tweeting, the inaugural DIBI (Design It Build It) Conference took place on Wednesday (28th April 2010) in Newcastle upon Tyne, well The Sage at Gateshead to be specific. This is my review of the highlights of the day.

Setting a Default Custom Option in Magento

Custom Options in Magento are a great way to offer non-stock specific options on products that are being sold - for example allowing the customisation of an item by adding text. This is very simple to do with the standard functionality. On the site I am currently building I had a need to offer a custom option on a product - in my specific case it was the nib type on a fountain pen. This article covers how I achieved this with Magento 1.4.

Upgrading WordPress via SSH

There's no doubt that SSH is the quickest way to upgrade an existing WordPress installation - particularly for upgrades between minor versions (for example from 2.9.1 to the latest 2.9.2 at the time of writing). Recently I've been relying on the instructions in this article from Raoul Pop with a very minor change and I'm repeating them here now - mainly so I never lose them!

Establishing a Baseline

Yesterday I finally started doing something I've been meaning to do for at least a year - establishing a default starting point for new web projects which will enable me to pick up and go as fast as possible - unimaginatively called Base Package.
